A woman researches the benefits of a rhinoplasty on her phone.

Rhinoplasty (also known as a “nose job”) is a very delicate procedure, and our Tucson patients often have many questions when they first begin their research. All the information can feel overwhelming when you’re starting your plastic surgery journey. But don’t worry—you’re definitely not alone.

By knowing the basics about rhinoplasty, you can feel more confident before heading into your procedure. In this blog post, we’ll answer several of the internet’s most commonly asked rhinoplasty questions.

How is rhinoplasty surgery done?

Rhinoplasty is a cosmetic procedure used to reshape the nose and enhance its appearance. It begins with the surgeon making a small incision either inside the nose or along the thin strip of skin between the nostrils. This gives the doctor room to adjust the underlying nasal structures carefully. After the surgeon reshapes the cartilage and bone, the incisions are stitched back up.

What are the differences between open and closed rhinoplasty?

Open rhinoplasty and closed rhinoplasty are two popular surgical techniques. Depending on your particular needs, you may be more suited to one technique or the other. A few differences are:

  • Open rhinoplasty: Performed by making a small external incision across the strip of skin that separates the nostrils. This gives the surgeon greater visibility during treatment and can improve accuracy during reshaping.
  • Closed rhinoplasty: Involves two small internal incisions made along the inside of each nostril. This technique is slightly less invasive and creates no visible scarring after surgery.

Each approach achieves excellent rhinoplasty results. Your doctor will discuss which option is best for your unique situation.

Is rhinoplasty surgery painful?

Like any surgery, rhinoplasty patients can experience some discomfort. The gauze packing used after treatment can create noticeable pressure. Patients may also experience slight bruising or swelling immediately following the procedure. You can reduce this bruising or swelling by gently applying ice packs to your nose and keeping your head elevated for the first couple of days after surgery. These side effects fade eventually, and most rhinoplasty patients return to work or school within 1 to 2 weeks.

How long does swelling last after rhinoplasty surgery?

Swelling will last for a few weeks after your rhinoplasty surgery. The shape of your nose won’t be fully refined until the tissues begin to heal. Most patients report their swelling subsiding after around 4 to 8 weeks. Many feel “public ready” around 2 weeks after surgery, but your nose will continue to settle into its final shape for many months to come.
