Good Candidates for Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty, often called nose surgery, reshapes the nose while preserving your unique features to create a naturally enhanced appearance. Dr. Olson performs nose surgery by sculpting nasal tissue, cartilage, and bone into a desirable form. People from Saddlebrooke, Sahuarita, and other nearby cities visit him for this procedure to:

  • Diminish the size of the nose
  • Augment the size of the nose
  • Refine the shape of the nose tip or bridge
  • Narrow nostril width
  • Fine-tune the angle between the nose and upper lip
  • Repair breathing difficulty due to nasal abnormalities
  • Refine features affected by injury or concerns present since birth
  • Balance facial features

Your Rhinoplasty Consultation

During your consultation, Dr. Olson will examine your nose to assess how it balances with your other facial features and how it functions. He will ask you to describe what you’d like to change. You will learn about factors that can influence your procedure, such as nasal structure, bones, cartilage, skin thickness, and overall facial shape. Together with Dr. Olson, you will identify the appropriate goals for your procedure.

Previewing Results With 3D Imaging

Dr. Olson uses computer imaging software so that he can give you a customized “preview” of what your results could look like. Patients find that the computer imaging process helps them to refine their ideas about what the surgery can achieve and helps them to discuss their options. It also ensures that patients and Dr. Olson envision the same results.

Rhinoplasty Techniques

In Tucson, Dr. Olson is recognized by his peers for his rhinoplasty expertise and is often invited to speak to other surgeons about advanced cosmetic and functional rhinoplasty techniques. Rhinoplasty is one of the most complicated procedures a facial plastic surgeon performs. Customizing the technique to match the aesthetic goals of each patient is essential to getting the desired results.

Open vs. Closed Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty can be performed with the following techniques:

  • Open rhinoplasty involves an incision across the strip of skin separating the nostrils (the columella). This incision allows Dr. Olson to carefully fold back the skin across the bridge of the nose.
  • Closed rhinoplasty involves incisions placed inside the nose and is appropriate for subtle improvements.

Dr. Olson primarily uses the open technique because:

  • The results are more consistent than the results of the older closed rhinoplasty technique.
  • He can access the underlying nasal structures more easily than with the closed technique.
  • He has better visibility during the procedure, which is preferable when reshaping the delicate structures of the nose.
  • The resulting scar is almost imperceptible.

What Procedures Can Be Combined With Rhinoplasty?

The nose is a key feature in the balance and harmony of your face. In fact, one of the benefits of rhinoplasty is to restore that balance and give the face a symmetrical, aesthetically pleasing appearance. Dr. Olson often combines rhinoplasty with chin augmentation with a chin implant (see patient photos) or injectable fillers to create a more balanced profile.

Recovery

Rhinoplasty patients return home on the day of surgery with a cast or splint placed over the nose. You will be prescribed pain medication for the first few days of recovery. Avoiding strenuous activity, lifting, or any activity that elevates heart rate or blood pressure during the first 10 days is important.

Recovery Milestones

Expect to achieve the following milestones along this general timeline (experiences vary):

  • Cast/splint removed: 7 to 10 days
  • Return to work, school, and light exercise: 10 to 14 days
  • Resume strenuous exercise: 3 to 4 weeks
  • See improved shape: 3 months (as swelling fades)
  • Resume contact sports: 4 to 6 months
  • Final results: 12+ months

Frequently Asked Questions

Is rhinoplasty painful?

Most people who get a nose job at our Tucson practice do not find the recovery to be especially painful. People sometimes have a headache and feel congested, with discomfort rated fairly low on the pain scale. We will go over your pain management options before your operation.

Is rhinoplasty covered by insurance?

Cosmetic rhinoplasty is an elective procedure and is not covered by health insurance. We offer financing options through reputable health care financing companies, including Prosper HealthCare Lending and LendingUSA.

How should I sleep after rhinoplasty?

While you can’t control everything, adjusting your sleep position after rhinoplasty is an easy way to minimize swelling, bruising, and congestion. Keep your head elevated each night for at least a week by sleeping in a recliner or propped up in bed with pillows. For other recovery tips, visit this blog post.

When can I wear glasses after a nose job?

Most patients are ready to start wearing glasses again 4 to 6 weeks after their nose surgery, once cleared by Dr. Olson. It’s important to prevent pressure on the nasal bones and cartilage during the early stages of healing to avoid discomfort or affecting the shape of the nose.

Is rhinoplasty permanent?

Nasal surgery can last a lifetime when performed by a board-certified facial plastic surgeon such as Dr. Olson who specializes in the procedure. The nose, like the rest of the face, changes over time as part of the aging process, but the fundamental changes made during rhinoplasty will remain. You should keep in mind, however, that the final results of a cosmetic rhinoplasty take up to a year to reveal themselves.

Can a patient be too young or too old for rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is one of the few facial plastic surgery procedures that people tend to get at a younger age. There are a number of reasons for this, but women and men may decide to undergo a cosmetic rhinoplasty at practically any age. At the younger end of the spectrum, Dr. Olson sees patients who are in their teenage years who desire cosmetic improvement in the appearance of their nose and possibly improvement in nasal function. Most patients become candidates for surgery between the ages of 15 and 16. Prior to this age, nasal structures may still growing, so we try to avoid operating on patients younger than this.
