Healing After IPL Photofacial Day by Day: When To Expect Results

Healing after an IPL photofacial takes 1 to 2 weeks, with results gradually emerging as your skin renews itself. Your skin will move through a few predictable stages: a brief flush, a period when dark spots look darker before they fade, and finally a brighter, more even complexion. Here’s what I tell my patients to expect at each step, from the first few hours to final results.

What Does Your Skin Look Like Right After IPL?

In the hours following your IPL treatment, your skin will likely feel warm and look pink, much like a mild sunburn. Some patients also experience mild swelling, especially around the cheeks, which typically resolves within 24 to 48 hours.

A cool compress can help ease any discomfort, and you’re welcome to wear makeup if you’d like to even out your tone before heading out.

Your IPL Healing Timeline

How Long Does IPL Redness Last?

For most patients, IPL redness lasts anywhere from a few hours to a couple of days. You may notice pinkness for a little longer if you are receiving treatment for rosacea or broken capillaries, since the blood vessels need time to collapse and be absorbed by your body.

What Happens to Dark Spots After IPL?

Around the second or third day after IPL, sunspots and freckles begin to darken and may take on a speckled look, almost like coffee grounds sitting on the skin. This is called peppering and occurs when the excess pigment has broken apart and is being pushed toward the surface.

While it’s tempting to try to scrub these spots away, picking can irritate the skin or cause new discoloration. Over the next couple of weeks, the darkened areas will gradually slough off, revealing the lighter, clearer skin underneath.

How Long Does It Take To See IPL Photofacial Results?

You’ll notice the first improvements once the peppering sheds, usually within 1 to 2 weeks after your appointment. Your brown spots will look noticeably lighter, and your complexion will take on a brighter, more even tone. Redness improves more gradually as the treated vessels continue to fade.

One session makes a visible difference in your skin tone, but most patients get the best results from a series of treatments spaced 3 to 4 weeks apart. Each session builds on the last, and periodic maintenance treatments help preserve your progress.

You can see how these improvements add up over time in our IPL photofacial before-and-after photos.

How Can You Support Your Skin Between Sessions?

Sun protection is the most important part of IPL aftercare, especially under the Arizona sun. UV exposure can trigger new pigment and undo your progress, so apply a sunscreen that’s broad spectrum, SPF 30 or higher, and water resistant every day, even when it’s cloudy. Remember the backs of your hands, too, since they’re one of the most common places that sunspots can form.

Gentle skincare also helps. Stick to a mild cleanser and moisturizer while your skin recovers. Once you’ve healed, treatments like a HydraFacial® or exosome therapy can support your skin health between IPL appointments.
