5 Things to Know Before Your Rhinoplasty

Choosing to undergo surgery isn’t a decision to take lightly, and this is especially the case for rhinoplasty. The nose is one of the most noticeable features of the face and dramatically influences your appearance. Many patients begin their treatment research browsing photo galleries and looking for pricing. While these topics are informative and useful, there are other important factors to consider if you’re interested in rhinoplasty. Here are a few rhinoplasty research tips we give our Tucson and Saddlebrooke neighbors.

Do your research and find a trusted doctor.

Many plastic surgeons perform rhinoplasty, but that doesn’t mean you should trust just any doctor. Rhinoplasty is a very delicate surgery that takes years of experience to perfect. Begin your research by looking for a board-certified plastic surgeon who specializes in facial procedures. Read patient reviews and browse their before-and-after gallery. This will give you an idea of what kind of results you can expect.

Understand your procedure options.

There is more than one way to perform rhinoplasty, depending on your needs. The 2 main techniques for the procedure are an open rhinoplasty or a closed rhinoplasty. An open rhinoplasty involves a tiny external incision across the strip of skin that separates your nostrils, while a closed rhinoplasty involves incisions only inside the nose. The different approaches offer different benefits, and your doctor will walk you through your options.

Rhinoplasty is for more than just appearances.

Rhinoplasty is an excellent way to adjust and refine the nose. However, the procedure has practical benefits that go beyond just aesthetics. Many men and women turn to rhinoplasty as a way to correct chronic sinus problems or improve breathing difficulties caused by a facial injury. If you have a deviated septum, you can combine rhinoplasty with your septoplasty to reshape your nose while correcting your septum.

Recovery and results take time.

It’s natural to be excited about seeing your new nose after rhinoplasty, but keep in mind: Final rhinoplasty results take time. Your nose will be bandaged and set with a splint for at least 1 week after your procedure. Swelling and healing time vary depending on your procedure’s particular technique. Over the next several months, swelling will subside and the tissues will settle into place. It may take up to a year for you to see the end result—but we promise it is worth the wait.

Rhinoplasty is different for different people.

No two people are exactly the same, and no two noses are either. The goal of rhinoplasty is to refine the look of your nose while still maintaining your personal character. A successful procedure can change the shape and profile or correct cookedness and drooping, but it won’t make you look like a specific model or friend who underwent surgery. Set healthy expectations and know that the procedure will make you look like a better version of yourself.
